Long Live the King: Book One of the Charlemagne Saga (Volume 1) is the debut novel by Guy Cote. The author has written a number of screenplays and has spent time as a teacher in south Florida. This is his first novel and the first installment in the Charlemagne Saga. Cote’s experience and education in history has fueled his interest and ability in writing historical fiction that rings true to any reader, no matter what the genre. This science fiction thriller adventure story unites many popular genres in a seamless story line that many readers will enjoy. The author’s ability to write convincingly using world history and creative fiction simply adds to the experience reminiscent of Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code.
I got the distinct impression that the author was a screenwriter as much of this novel came across as episodic and left me feeling as though I were reading something that was destined to become a screenplay. Scenic details that include historic England and Tucson, AZ; a plot to clone Emperor Charlemagne; and a plan to unite Europe into an ancient city-state all add to the depth and creative detail cleverly woven into this story.
Readers will enjoy this historical adventure that explores love, loss, murder, and mayhem to give every reader something to enjoy as Cote leads them through this engaging tale. I think we all suspend our disbelief when we pick up a fictional novel, but Cote brings a level of historic relevance and credibility that blurs the line between what is real and what is really fun to read. I am really looking forward to reading the promised upcoming installments in the Charlemagne Saga.
