Little Differences by Brittanie Ganai Thompson handles the relevant topic of bullying which has become the bane of society nowadays. It is not only children but there are many adults too who are victims of bullying. The sixth graders are going to Sea World and their teacher reminds them to get their parents' signature before next Friday. Katie trips as she is walking towards her seat in the bus and her friend, Jessie, helps her into her seat. Alani Yang is the tallest girl in their class and she has this mean habit of using her size to her advantage. She does the same thing to Jessie when she is getting down. Katie's parents have taught her to be kind to others, even if they are not kind to her. Katie and Jessie notice that all is not well with Alani Yang and there is something weird happening to her. What is Alani's story?
The author's approach to the topic is helpful to all children who have been bullied, irrespective of their backgrounds. The story is about friendship, acceptance and becoming friends in spite of their differences. The author's advice to stand up and be a genuine friend to take away the sting of bullying is motivating and encouraging to all young readers.This is a good storybook for children to read because it will help them handle bullying in a better and more positive way.The story will make it easy for tutors, educators, and parents to explain to children the importance of being kind, even when the other person is mean.
