The motto is “We employ.” Whether you’re laid off or hate your existing job, Limbus agency seems to have the right solution for every person. Limbus, Inc. is a shared-world anthology with five excellent stories from five authors: Jonathan Maberry, Joseph Nassise, Benjamin Kane Ethridge, Anne C. Petty and Brett J. Talley.
All are excellent novellas, but I do have my favorites. First and foremost, the noiresque Strip Search by Jonathan Maberry, which I delightfully imagined in a black and white film. Hunter is an out of work detective, a jaded character that we love in any classic detective story. Then a dame, who happens to be a Limbus recruiter, hires him to investigate a series of murders of young women. Maberry takes you in with his sharp writing and philosophical dialogue of his protagonist. The plot is amazing and unpredictable. This story makes me want to watch Bogart and Astor in The Maltese Falcon again.
My second favorite is The Sacrifice by Brett J. Talley. Ryan Dixson is a war veteran who is attending a support group for his post traumatic stress disorder. His dream to rejoin the Marines is destroyed when he is violently attacked one night. This is where Limbus comes in, offering the right job for him – rescue a kidnapped girl. Yet there is a catch, a creepy one, as it always is with Limbus. The supernatural element in this story seals the deal for me, other than Talley’s weird and ghostly prose.
Maberry, Nassise, Ethridge, Petty and Talley have their own interpretations on what exactly Limbus is, yet are still able to harmonize their stories around the premise. The mysterious agency will keep readers guessing. There is something for everyone in Limbus, Inc. and particularly paranormal and horror fans will definitely be satisfied.
