Lights Off is the third book in the Lights Out series by Joey Paul and a great treat for young adult science fiction fans. In this installment, Lock and Clara have successfully escaped from the army's grip and enemies like Lana. With the resistance, the kingdom is still threatened by war, and the king will crush anyone who stands in his way of gaining control over his people. As the king continues to terrorize people, Lock and Clara, together with the rebels, must make sure they are prepared for the inevitable and that they end up on the winning side of the impending war.
This is a gripping story with realistic characters and a setting written with fascinating details. The world-building is deftly accomplished, and readers get a clear idea of the world the characters navigate, the different factions operating in this world, and the threats that hover above the safe haven that Evendown rebels and Lock are building for people joining the war. Joey Paul is a skilled writer with a unique gift for creating conflicts that steadily propel the story forward. The characters are elaborately written, and those who have followed Lock and Clara from the start of the series will adore the way the characters have evolved through the narrative. Their inner worlds are lucidly captured, and each challenge reveals a deeper level of their humanity and resilience. Lights Off is a wonderful tale with a dystopian setting, believable characters, and exceptionally developed conflict. It is a hard-to-put-down story with great potential to entertain fans of the genre and readers who enjoy strong writing.
