Liam and Stinky Owl by Jennifer and William Skinner is a children's book that follows Liam and his new best friend, Stinky Owl, who may have an unpleasant smell but proves to be a loyal and brave companion. One day, while playing in the forest, they encounter a group of baby rabbits who are lost and scared because their mother hasn’t returned. Stinky Owl, using his sharp eyesight, helps locate the mother rabbit trapped in a thorn bush. After freeing her, he guides her back to her babies, and the group is reunited. The squirrels, who had previously avoided Stinky Owl due to his smell, apologize and admire his courage. The story concludes with Liam and Stinky Owl's friendship being stronger than ever, showing that being true to oneself—no matter the flaws—is what truly matters.

Liam and Stinky Owl: The Smelly Hero by Jennifer and William Skinner is a delightful story about the misconceptions of prejudice and forming conclusions about others based on appearance. The writing is engaging and humorous, making it perfect for young readers. The Skinners are also the illustrators and offer a wonderfully unique stencil effect where the white space is left unprinted. For a story that revolves around being different, it's a really thoughtful touch to the overall aesthetic. The story itself is entertaining and my tiniest reader asked for it to be read again the next night, which is pretty much the only testament a children's book needs. As a parent, I liked following along as well, and, overall, this charming and heartwarming tale is an excellent read for children, encouraging them to embrace differences and value inner qualities.
