I love this opening quote in Christine L. Henderson’s Let’s Share a Meal: “The secret of success in life is to eat what you like and let the food fight it out inside.” Mark Twain wrote these words and it certainly defines the author’s (and my own) passion for good food and good cooking (and baking). As the author clearly points out, there’s nothing better than a home-cooked meal. Fast food might seem easier, but it’s costly and you have to drive somewhere to get it or pay more to have it delivered (often cold by the time it arrives). Preparing good, wholesome homecooked meals not only saves money, but it’s healthier, tastier, and still hot when served at the table. From simple egg dishes and salads to creative alternatives like a breakfast pizza, there are a lot of possibilities for good food to serve to family and friends at any time of the day and without the fuss and expense one would expect.
Christine L. Henderson’s book, Let’s Share a Meal: Comfort Food for Family and Friends, is more than just another cookbook. It’s a culinary journey through simplicity at its finest of home cooking and dining. The author begins with an introduction to her personal culinary experiences which began in her mother’s and her grandmother’s kitchens. The recipes are organized into sections: breakfast, lunch, main dishes, appetizers, desserts and more. Each recipe begins with a brief introduction to its origin and sometimes a suggestion of how and when to prepare it. The ingredients are listed in a logical order with clear, concise instructions on how to prepare and cook/ bake the dish. Alternate suggestions are also included in some of the recipes as in the Oatmeal Zucchini Breakfast Bread where the author suggests substituting a banana for the zucchini for a different flavor. This book is a great addition to any cookbook library.
