In Legion of Pneumas by Lily Johnson, London is a man with a prosperous future; a swordsman known throughout the kingdom and about to marry the king’s daughter. London is personally given a mission by the king that involves slaying a beast terrorizing the land. London, however, dies during this mission and is guided back to the world of the living by a seemingly familiar voice. London learns he is a damned; a human whose spirit separates from their soul at birth and Brian, London’s pneuma, is the voice that guided him back from death. Together they are tasked with defeating Damon and Talon - the strongest damned and pneuma. London’s prosperous future is turned upside-down with him needing to forge a bond with Brian and fight in a war he never wanted.
Lily Johnson's first book in The Damned, Legion of Pneumas, kept me enthralled chapter after chapter. Excellent writing from Lily Johnson makes the growing bond between London and Brian feel authentic and made me empathize with both London and Brian on this journey. Battles with other damned and pneumas are well-choreographed, showing off the various abilities and supernatural powers of the pneumas and London’s own mastery of the sword, ax, and bow. I was captured by the suspense within Legion of Pneumas as it was made very apparent that every character may have ulterior motives, making it harder for London and Brian to discern who to trust and who to keep at sword’s length. Legion of Pneumas by Lily Johnson is a fantastic introduction to The Condemned that makes me want to follow London and Brian’s story to the end.
