Rising Tides is the second installment in the Legends of Andolin by A.M. Portman, a gripping fantasy that delivers impeccably accomplished world-building. Lady Adella Grimless and her companions focus on the impending war with Sornia. Readers are introduced to Adella, Kol, and Armand, who decide to split up, each confronting perils on their paths. Kol takes a treacherous journey across the frontier, where he discovers the haunting truths of his past. Armand travels to Raymouth to convey an urgent message but soon finds himself aboard a reaver ship, sailing into turbulent waters. As the Sornian forces draw near Elldon, Adella makes her way to Pentz in search of allies, but her plans take an unexpected turn with mounting dangers. The story narrates the journey of multiple characters battling for survival and struggling to fend off formidable foes. Can they succeed and protect what is most important to them?
Rising Tides presents intriguing and multilayered characters. Adella, Kol, and Martin embody the struggles and resilience of a war-torn society. Adella is portrayed as a determined leader grieving the loss of her parents while shouldering the responsibilities of rebuilding her homeland. Kol is a reliable protector and strategic thinker deeply connected to Adella. Meanwhile, Martin, the merchant, offers comic relief yet provides a perspective on the intricate socioeconomic struggles surrounding the conflict. The setting feels like a character in its own right with richly described places like the ruins of Greywood Manor, the treacherous Campos, and the turbulent waters of Belgrand Bay. A.M. Portman effectively blends natural elements with the cultural depth of the nations vying for supremacy, showing the fragility of peace in such a world. As the characters navigate loyalties between their homelands and personal bonds, the question of what sacrifices must be made to preserve their world drives the narrative forward. The stakes heighten with the introduction of reavers and supernatural calamities. This novel can be read as a standalone and offers intriguing and exceptional storytelling.
