Led Astray by Karlianna Voncil is a refreshing crime thriller. Emily Burns's life is cut short at just 16 years old. She disappeared 6 months before and now her body has been found in Sweet Valley, one of the seedier neighborhoods. Detectives van Daan and Martinez need to find her killer and in their hunt for clues and information, they stumble over Daisy Evans. Just 13 years old, she may have been the last one to see Emily alive but, on interrogation, the story she tells is unbelievable, dark and twisted, and it poses one question – just who can you trust?
Led Astray: A Crime Thriller by Karlianna Voncil is a YA coming of age story with a sting in the tale, something different. Although initially this story did not grab me from the first page, as I continued to read I found myself inexorably drawn into a dark and twisted tale to the extent that I didn’t want to put the book down. It isn’t a long story but it is involved, with flashbacks that add depth, teasing the story out gradually. There is violence but it fits in with the story and is not over the top or unnecessary. The theme of the story is actually quite sad; forgotten and abandoned children just trying to make their way in life. The characters are really well developed, real people you can empathize with and relate to. The pace is good and there is plenty of action.
