Laurel's Quest (The Cornwall Adventures Book 1) by Nancy M. Bell is a young adult fantasy novel. Laurel Rowan is sent to stay with a family friend in Cornwall while her mother fights cancer. Homesick and heartbroken at the thought of losing her mother, Laurel is desperate to find a way to save her mother. Along her journey to Sarie's home, she encounters Coll and, after battling a bully, they quickly become friends. She makes friends with several schoolmates, Aisling and Gort. She quickly realizes that everything is not as it seems and that the world is full of magical beings and places. She encounters the White Lady at a magical spring, who tells her that if she can solve the riddle in time, her mother will be healed. Laurel, along with her friends Aisling, Coll and Gort, must travel in search of clues to solve the riddle. Laurel is aided on the way by mystical creatures including the fire salamander and the half man-half seal Selkie, whose answers often lead to more questions. Laurel wonders if she will be able to solve the riddle before it is too late.
Laurel's Quest (The Cornwall Adventures Book 1) by Nancy M. Bell is a captivating tale of a young girl's journey against all odds to save her mother, and the devotion of her friends in helping her in her quest. Laurel's Quest is full of fun and interesting characters. Nancy M. Bell weaves vivid descriptions of the historical locations the group visits and the mystical creatures that they meet. I enjoyed the banter between the characters as they joked about the differing language between their British and American upbringing.
