Last Chance California by Brian Price is a realistic, biting tale of one millennial’s prism of reality. As the story opens, you find Wyatt Lewis lamenting that his California dreams are over. Governor Gavin Newsom issues the first-ever lockdown in response to the outbreak of COVID-19 in the state of California. Wyatt feels there is no point in listening to what he already knows. He came to California not only to chase his dreams but to escape his father, whose late-night arguments with his mother come close to committing murder. In San Diego, he reunites with his old friend, Summer Harrison, and becomes drawn to Leah Murphy, a free-spirited girl. Summer and Leah will show Wyatt the dark side of California’s glitz and glamor. On top of that, he becomes an overworked copywriter. As the pandemic kicks in, Wyatt realizes the billions of reasons why he should go back to Jersey. But there is still a reason why he is still willing to give California one more try—a reason that will piss off his dad.
Last Chance California is an excellent illustration of millennial angst. The pandemic has made most of them feel restless. Something feels wrong, and they feel that they need to do something about it. At that point, they want to take their lives in a different direction, either to escape hopelessness or to chase after something. This is what’s fascinating about Brian Price’s novel. The way he portrays the mental state of his protagonist feels like a window that opens onto many things that need correcting, and life begins a quest, only to discover sordid truths about the things that you left and with a better understanding of life’s hows and whys. It’s a brilliant story, one in which the first-person POV effectively conveys how the main character sees things. If you have ever felt restless and the need for change at some point in your life, this story is highly relatable.
