Kris and Kate’s Next Adventure Out to the Wide Wide Sea by Ruth Finnegan, with illustrations by Abby Smith, is the third book in The Kate-Pearl Series. In this adventurous picture book for children, two siblings, Kris and Kate, find a boat and set sail for a lovely but unpredictable adventure with their dog, Holly. Rhymes add flavor to the story and make it possible to sing along while following the children on their adventures. They bring to the fore the fun that can be had when we choose to engage in sea adventures. In addition, it’s a great learning opportunity, as you’re never sure what you’ll encounter while out at sea.
The illustrations greatly aid the story's progression and vivify their tumultuous voyage. They survive storms and sail past volcanoes and great mountains before arriving on an island when all hope seems lost. They eventually rest on the island for a year before they are encouraged to venture out and continue broadening their horizons by the king of the island. Kris and Kate’s Next Adventure Out to the Wide Wide Sea by Ruth Finnegan is a lovely book to teach children resilience, teamwork, friendship, hope, patience, appreciation for the sea and adventure, and the power of dreams. This book will also encourage children to treat sea creatures with kindness because, when the children desperately need help, a sea animal they met earlier comes to their rescue. I recommend this book to children between the ages of three and eight.
