Kitten & Squirrel is a children’s book written by Aviva Gittle and illustrated by Tekla Huszár. Kitten, who is very proud of his beautiful tail, is walking through the woods one day when he spots a strange looking creature with the most glorious tail that Kitten has ever seen. When Kitten asks the creature his name, it responds that it is called Squirrel. Kitten compliments Squirrel on his incredibly fluffy tail. Squirrel asks Kitten what he uses his narrow tail for, and Kitten says that he uses it to tell his human friends what type of mood he is in. Squirrel says that he uses his tail to take shelter in the rain or snow and to keep warm when it is cold. He also tells Kitten that if he falls out of a tree, he can use his tail as a parachute so he lands on his feet. Both Kitten and Squirrel agree that they have amazing tails. After Squirrel offers Kitten one of his acorns (which Kitten politely declines), they decide to have a race to see who is faster. So begins a beautiful friendship.
What better animals to bring to a children’s book than the most adorable ones on the planet? The illustrations alone are wonderful and mesh well with the story. Aviva Gittle tells a story of fun and friendship. Both the kitten and the squirrel which feature in Kitten & Squirrel have an encounter which is almost human-like, enabling children to easily connect with what is happening in the book. This is the type of story which would stir up a child’s imagination in such a way that they would be left with a smile.
