When I first saw the title of this book, Kicking the Bucket List, by Gail Rubin, I was hoping that it would not be a list of extraordinary things to do before I die, such as bungee jumping or visiting the Eiffel Tower. I was happily surprised to find that this is a list of things to do before you die that will help your family cope with issues both large and small. There is a list of 100 things to do, such as choose a power of attorney representative, or write a list of social media accounts and passwords, write your own obituary, or write your own epitaph. Silly or sensible, it’s up to you.
Ms. Rubin is a certified thanatologist, which means she is a counselor for issues dealing with death. She has seen many families who have not prepared properly and are completely at sea when the time comes. This is a book of 100 sensible checklist items, including many that will help not only at the time of bereavement, but several years earlier. A huge issue is preparing to downsize one's possessions to facilitate moving to a smaller home, possibly into senior housing. Ms. Rubin uses wit and years of experience to make this list of 100 things to do. Each item is only two or three cheerfully written paragraphs, in easy to swallow bites, yet I found myself taking my time reading this book in order to absorb many of the suggestions. I am at the time in life where this book is really speaking to me. Kicking the Bucket List is a valuable resource for people looking at their retirement years, or for younger family members to share with the older ones, making sure that everyone is clear about finances, possessions, and last wishes.
