Kelly's Folly by T. H. Forest is about champion diver Kelly Townsend's relocation from the UK to the US which, unfortunately, does not go as smoothly as he had hoped. Being the new kid in school is always awkward, as is catching up on American culture (drive on your right, please). Throw in the classic love triangle and violá, there's your recipe for disaster. Star quarterback Lance is exactly what Kelly needs by his side, except he's not out yet, and Kelly, being fabulously out and proud, has a hard time accepting it; Noah, the sexy drummer boy, is just as hot and he's definitely out, which would certainly make things a whole lot easier for Kelly. Between training for the Olympics and keeping up with horrible movies courtesy of Pip and the gang, Kelly hardly has time to process his drama-filled love life, never mind figuring out who he wants to be with. Soon though, Kelly realizes that being sweet sixteen isn't so sweet after all and that love really does hurt.
Kelly's quirky and one-of-a-kind personality was a breath of fresh summer air; he is a complete diva and just the right amount of complete and utter crazy! The other characters were just as unique and interesting; each had their struggles to overcome, and trying to navigate through life in a confusing phase is difficult, something I found relatable. What I also enjoyed about Kelly's Folly besides the double entendre is the thought-provoking advice T.H. Forest gives: life can be extremely unfair and being judged for our sexuality or skin color will always be a factor to some. We just have to accept it. Reading Kelly's Folly was a wonderful experience; I only regret not having read this novel in high school. I recommend Kelly's Folly to supporters of the LGBTQ+ movement and the community, especially those fabulously out and proud like Kelly.
