Keeper of the Mirror: The Book of Peter is a fantasy adventure novel written by Theresa Nellis. Thirteen-year-old Peter is sick of the rules imposed by his parents, Tom and Kate. When his dog, Sully, accidentally brings a mysterious old man through a magical mirror, Peter sees his chance at freedom. The old man introduces himself as Bael and soon takes Peter under his wing. They travel to New York, where Bael takes three boys named Zack, Huxley, and Omar from a foster home and tricks them into his service. Meanwhile, Peter discovers some dark secrets about himself and Bael. As they hatch plans to steal Kate's powerful family heirloom, Zack prepares to free himself from their clutches. He receives unexpected help from Peter's parents and Sully.
Keeper of the Mirror: The Book of Peter is a solid start to what seems to be a promising fantasy series for kids. Author Theresa Nellis's imaginative tale of a spoiled brat gone rogue is full of magic and wonder, entertaining you from start to finish. The plot moves quickly, and the narrative is laced with wit and deadpan humor. The characters are colorful, with quirks that make their personalities pop out of the pages. Zack and Kate's dynamic provides a stark contrast to Peter and Bael's relationship. I enjoyed them all but found Sully to be my personal favorite. I had a wonderful time reading Keeper of the Mirror: The Book of Peter. I will recommend it to readers who enjoy fantasy adventure stories.
