Just Wait by Briar Angell alternates between parenting advice and freeform poetry. The author describes her experience with the child she bore, and discusses her feelings on generally accepted social practices, like crib sleeping and hosting family and friends immediately after a child’s return from the hospital. She encourages parents to embrace every moment of their baby’s life while sympathizing with any possible challenges her readers may be encountering.
I agree with the author about many of her statements. Her words are like poetry, and the overall tone of the book is calming and inspirational. Her declaration about time truly stood out, and as a reader, it resonated with me. I found myself recalling my children's births as I read her passages about leaving chores until another day to watch the daily development of my babies, and the eye rolls from my older children that only reminded me how they were developing their personalities. Many times, there were tears in my eyes as she admitted to using her own life as an example and made a reference to her mother in appreciation.
This book may be read by a mother or father, as the words do not focus strictly on the feelings of a particular gender, even though the author is clearly a mother. I’d recommend Just Wait by Briar Angell to any new parent, whether they’re struggling with the new responsibilities of parenthood or not, as the book inspires the reader to form a strong bond with his or her child.
