John’s Pond by Donna Lynch is set in the 70s in a Cape Cod community known as Mashpee. Many of the residents are determined to take the land from the Wampanoag indigenous people who have lived on the land for centuries. Laurie is a high school senior, a white girl who does not understand why the indigenous people are not being treated fairly. Tobin is the young man who is out front fighting for his people, even if it means going to jail and facing bodily harm. When Laurie and Tobin meet, they are instantly attracted to each other, which can only lead to problems. However, the two are sure of the love they feel and set out to find a future. Laurie’s mother is totally against this while Tobin’s sister and family welcome Laurie with open arms. Unfortunately, when the two return from a special trip they shared in Wyoming and they find everyone against them, they are forced into making some hard decisions.

John’s Pond is a story of forbidden romance, prejudice, community and so much more. The real questions are can their love survive and can the community be forgiving. The answers take several twists and turns and I will not spoil the results by giving you any more information. I found it impossible to put this book down. I was drawn into the story and could feel the joy, pain, and fear of both Laurie and Tobin. I felt anger toward those who did not support the indigenous rights and found myself yelling at them in my head. Donna Lynch was brilliant in developing her characters and the plot of John’s Pond. I believe that this is a great book that can be enjoyed by all readers, young and old. John’s Pond is a five-star winner.
