Johnny Madrid by John L. Evans is an old-fashioned detective crime novel set in 1972. When a beautiful young starlet is found murdered, Detective Johnny Madrid is put on the case. Just when Madrid thought he had exhausted all his leads, he stumbles on a bizarre confession.
John L. Evans has made Detective Johnny Madrid a very likeable cop. Madrid is polite and usually gets along with all his suspects. Instead of the people he interviews giving him constant attitude, Madrid finds a way to talk to them as if they were old friends. At first I thought that this was the second book in a series because Madrid seems comfortable with the reader and Evans hints at a back story to Madrid.
While reading, I had characters that I suspected of committing the murder, but in the end I was not able to guess correctly. The answer to who committed the murder surprised me. I really hate it when I solve the murder way before the book ends, so this is something I appreciated. One thing I really liked that Evans did at the end of the story was to add a follow up on all the characters. I love seeing where characters end up after the story is finished.
Johnny Madrid is the first book in what I hope will be a series from John L. Evans. I really enjoyed reading about a likeable cop for once. Evans has also written several other books that I have yet to read. If you like books about old-fashioned gumshoes, this book is for you.
