Johnny and the Comanche by R Lawson Gamble begins in Texas in the 1870s. Nineteen-year-old Johnny Custer was searching for a land where his past would not find him after he had killed eight men in defense of himself and others. Dehydrated and hungry, Johnny collapsed and was taken by a Comanche Indian, Mukwooru. The two survived an ambush by Comancheros before encountering Tonkawa scouts known as the "Black Beasts". Colonel Ranald Mackenzie of the 4th United States Cavalry came to Johnny’s rescue while in pursuit of a band of Kiowa Indian warriors. This combined force of the Texas Rangers and Buffalo Soldiers was a crack unit detailed to Fort Richardson. During his travels across the desolate terrain, Johnny would meet Aruka Wa'ipu (Deer Woman) and war chief Quanah. Would Johnny finally see the future before him without looking back upon a past full of broken dreams and shattered lives?
Johnny and the Comanche is a thrilling novel, the tale of one man’s survival being dependent on another. Author R Lawson Gamble has a unique writing style, fast-paced, and filled with action. The scenes and locations are beautifully described, including the canyons, deserts, and oases. Each character has their own unique personality and Lawson does a fantastic job of bringing them all to life, from Buffalo Soldiers to Texas Rangers and Indian tribes. I especially enjoyed the way Lawson includes each character’s own traditions and rituals; he has clearly done his research. Johnny and the Comanche truly is a fantastic novel highly recommended to all adults.
