Jas and the Fundraiser by Shaquana Jackson is a children’s story about friendship. Jy, Asia’Lynn and Starya are best friends. When they meet Samantha at the park, they know they have to help her raise money for her sick dog. The friends decide to have a T-shirt fashion show to raise money.
I chose to read Jas and the Fundraiser with my 4-year-old. Her favorite part of the story was when the girls were creating their own T-shirt designs. When I showed her that she could decorate her own shirt at the back of the book, she got excited. She also liked that the three main characters were girls. She identified with them and said that they looked like her and her two best friends.
Personally, I liked that Jackson threw some Spanish words into the story. My daughter and I are trying to learn the language and this actually helped us. I also liked that Jackson used the idea of creating T-shirts for the fashion show. It is actually a very good idea for raising money for things. It is also a great idea for a project to get kids to work together on. Overall, I thought Jas and the Fundraiser was a good story. This is the type of book that I would love to see in more school libraries.
