Jacob The Jew VS. The Chinese Blood is the first book in a series by J. W. Durrah and it is a compelling entry for a detective series with strong occult underpinnings. NYPD Detective Jacob Jennings expects to be sent to Vietnam when he signs up with the US Army’s Military Intelligence unit, but instead, he finds himself working undercover alongside the Chinese police and pursuing a powerful, yet elusive drug, the cherry berry. News has it that this drug is produced in Hong Kong; however, no one has seen it, but its addictive character is unprecedented and the effects it has on some of the users are horrific. Jacob manages to get close to the creator of the drug, a high-ranking researcher, Dr. Wo Ling Cheung. But it seems Dr. Wo-Ling Cheung is just the tip of the iceberg as he has links with a powerful sorcerer, Yongli Baofung, whom Jacob suspects to be the mysterious power behind the drug. Time is ticking as plans are made by the sinister creator to launch the drug on the streets of New York. Can Jacob stop this plan before it’s too late?
Jacob The Jew VS. The Chinese Blood is not only well-plotted, but it is also cunningly plotted and expertly written with wonderful twists. The reader never knows for sure what to expect and the unpredictability in plot development creates the interest that most readers will have in this story. The characters are multidimensional and the idea of weaving occultism into the plot is unique, contributing to the tension that moves the plot forward and the element that will entice fans of horror. The drama is strong, the story emotionally charged, and the action never lacking. J. W. Durrah’s writing is of high quality, fluid, and compelling.
