Author: Peter Wilson lives in Sydney, Australia, with his wife and dog. When he’s not writing (which is most of the time, unfortunately), he works in the digital world, creating content for games, music, and
movie companies. A year and a half ago, he sat down to write another short story, something he’s been doing for many years. As the word count rose, he realized that the short story wasn’t so short and it had turned into a novel and now the novel has turned into a trilogy! Jack Gregson & the Forgotten Portal by Peter Wilson begins with the entire Gregson family gathered at the family manor for an annual get-together. In the Western Garden there is a mystical door that has been locked for ages, with only stories of ancestors who could travel through the door and into a world of monsters and wizards to keep the magic alive.
Jack and his cousins discover an enchanted book on the Gregson Manor and learn that the fantastical stories they had been told are indeed true. The blue emerald meant to seal the door from unwanted visitors has been stolen and the manor is vulnerable to attack from an evil family member who conquers and kills for his own gain. In order to protect their home and their world, they must venture past the door, facing death and danger at every turn. Wilson is wonderful when it comes to world building, seamlessly mixing reality and fantasy in a way that readers are able to relate to some moments while discovering something completely new in others.
I am a huge fan of fantasy and reading this reminded me of the first time I picked up the Narnia series; there’s just something about secret passages to another world that never gets old! The story is rich in detail and readers find themselves fully immersed in the adventure. Jack Gregson & the Forgotten Portal is a wonderful book for preteens and teenagers alike, with the perfect mix of action and adventure to keep readers enthralled from beginning to end. What a wonderful read!
