This is D.W. Harpers second book in the Jace Adventure Series. Her first children's book Jace's Adventure in the Forbidden Forest, also a Five Star Review from Readers Favorite, was published in 2013. Diane wanted to combine her writing talent with her artistic talent. She achieved this by writing and illustrating The Jace Series.

D.W. Harper delights children with her book Jace's Adventure at Crystal Lagoon. Summer is over and Jace is not too happy about going back to school. But things change when he meets his new teacher, Mrs. Merwin, who fascinates him with her mysterious presence and beauty. The adventure in the story starts when the fourth graders are taken to Crystal Lagoon Aquarium on a field trip. They are learning about the ocean and sea life and this trip is supposed to be educational. Jace is really excited about the trip. On the way, their bus breaks down at a National Park near the Lagoon. While he is eating lunch with his friend Rocco, his other friend Mia disappears into the woods. Jace goes looking for her and when he finds Mia, he is taken by surprise!
The story is very engaging for children and there are a lot of thrills and surprises to keep them glued to events. The author has used a simple theme and made it very interesting with her narration and the whimsicality in the plot. The twist in the plot gives it an edge and takes readers by surprise. Mia, Jace, and Rocco are like any other fourth grader you come across and they make the story lively with their cheerful characterization.
It is a story that all young readers will enjoy. It is breezy, brings memories of their times in school, and the teachers, friends and school life are all relatable and believable. A simple theme made effective with some great adventures, plot twists, and lovable characters.
