Wow. That's the one word I can think of right now, right this minute, to describe this book. It's not a light book at all. It's not a beautiful book. It's heart wrenching. It WILL bring tears to your eyes. It WILL make you stop and think. It will move you like no other book will move you.
Why do I say those things? Well, I don't want to give to much of the story away, as I don't believe in spoilers. But, I will tell you this. Abbie is 6 years old and just lost her mother. She and her older brother Alex go to live with their father and new step mother and brothers and sisters. Once there, things happen. TERRIBLE things. Things like 6-8 year olds being beaten for no reason; being subjects of pedophiles' abuse, as they are "sold out" for child pornography.
As Abbie gets older, she turns to a life of rebellion, living on the streets of London, and becoming so wild that no one can help her. She's lost, alone and pregnant at a young age. She just wants someone to love her. That's all she ever wanted. Ever since her mother left her and died.
This had me in tears from the minute Abbie had to live with her dad and was suffering at the hands of her step mom. No child, young or old, US or England, should have to go through that awful torture! This was a wonderfully written memoir. It was written in a way that really gripped me. I felt each blow that Abbie did, felt the loneliness, felt it ALL. This powerful memoir is worthy of 5 stars and recommendation to all who enjoy memoirs.
