Connections can happen between anyone, even a sixth-grader like Rusty and an elderly woman like Hazel who goes around town in a wheelchair. Into the Wind by William Loizeaux is a beautiful story about an unlikely connection that exudes beauty. One day, Hazel asked Rusty to take her for a ride on his boat and from there they built a bond and friendship of respect, trust, and passion for sailing. While this seems like a strange connection to others, for Rusty and Hazel it provides freedom and fills a void of what each actually needed at this time in their lives. Young and old can benefit from reading this book because it reflects the humanity of the different elements of life.
I fell in love with this story. It felt like a lovely bond between a child and a grandparent. As I read each page, I began to picture myself being a part of Rusty and Hazel's strong connection. As the author weaves you, the reader, into the intricate patterns of the lives of the characters, you begin to feel like you're a part of the story at every turn. Into the Wind by William Loizeaux is written like a good movie that you can't get enough of because it captures your attention and keeps you fully engaged. If you are looking for a great book to curl up with that reflects the beauty of life between two people, connections, and shared memories, or make a part of your book club, this is it. Highly recommended.
