In Inheritance by Rachel Adair, Alhanna Delaney's life took a turn when her parents were killed while on their way to a family party. The authorities classified the case as a hit and run. Alone and mournful as years go by, Alhanna suddenly learns about the death of an aunt named Beatrice Gillespie, whom she never met. Beatrice left Alhanna her estate, a tower to be exact, in Northern Ireland. However, in order to inherit it, she must reside in the tower for 365 days and nights. Along with this unusual term, her aunt also left a cryptic letter about the family’s ancestry.
I love the eye-catching black and white cover; it definitely complements and justifies the story. The prose is clear-cut and the structure of the chapters is also done wonderfully, with the chapters divided into parts. This makes the reading more collected and almost journal-like as we follow Alhanna's journey to discover the truth about herself, along with the mysterious death of her parents, the recent murders that have occurred since her arrival in England, and her time at the tower. The mystery about her own power, her connection to a woman from an alternate world, and the tragedies that connect them are very intriguing. That said, I wish that there were more about Beatrice in the story. Initially, I wasn’t sure about the direction of the plot, but Adair ties everything up nicely in the end. Overall, this is an intriguing read about magic, alternate universes, and even time-travel.
