In this second volume of poems by R.S. Rain, we encounter a woman’s struggle with severe depression. We follow her through her words of struggle and sorrow as she explains what’s going through her head. From childhood trauma to adulthood hopelessness, Rain describes her battle with mental illness through her treatment and eventual recovery.
I found these poems so relatable and close to home. As a person who is bipolar and has suffered from severe depression before, these poems are so understandable and instantly put me back in the dark place when I was struggling to find the help and medicine I needed to function. This book of poetry can be a real eye-opener to those who have never dealt with this type of psychological pain before. As you are reading page by page, you find yourself stepping into the author's shoes and feeling firsthand what she’s going through. There are so many cliches and assumptions about mental illness and depression, mainly from people who have never experienced it or those who like to ignore it.
What I loved the best were the poems that show Rain’s gradual recovery and the strength she began gaining when believing in herself and putting herself and her needs first. Step by step we read as she heals and as she removes toxic things from her life. The happy ending is a very satisfying and beautiful thing. It teaches a very important lesson and that is to never give up. It might seem hopeless now but these feelings are only temporary. The ending gives hope that if the author can come out of such darkness with clarity and a new, brighter outlook on life, then you can too. Inhale, Exhale is a powerful collection of poetry that readers will find inspiring.
