Inclined Elders are men and women who have made a conscious choice to ignore society's mindset of 'decline' and 'over the hill' as they age and have embraced an optimistic mindset of continuing to climb ever upwards. Inclined Elders: How to rebrand aging for self and society by Ramona Oliver gives a positive perception of aging and the Inclined Elders in this book leave their own unique legacies of wisdom and inspiration for future generations to understand. The book is a useful tool for readers to have a good attitude and mindset about aging, live a life of meaning and purpose, and leave a legacy to serve as role models to the coming generations. The tips, techniques, and strategies will encourage readers to live life with an open mind and not blindly accept and follow the norms laid down by society. The book has been divided into three sections - Attitude (Internal Focus), Growth (External Focus), and Empowerment (Societal Focus) - and shows readers how to live a life of 'Incline.'

The author shares illustrative stories that speak about the everyday lives of people who are living a life of Incline. The book is also all about accepting change and embracing it, and adopting a positive attitude from adulthood to elderhood. Ramona Oliver also speaks about the attitude of the younger generation towards aging. I like the manner in which the topic has been discussed, keeping in mind the pertinence and the seriousness of it, thereby giving aging people the confidence and encouragement to look at life with a renewed perception that is positive and optimistic. The author has shared many interesting resources too in Inclined Elders, and these are engaging and thought-provoking and can be considered when starting to live life as an Incline.

Excellent outlook and a great resource to help jumpstart your life into living as an Inclined Elder instead of admitting defeat as an 'old codger'. Even if you have been living an inclined aging, take the opportunity to read it and use it as a checklist to see what your true potential might be.

Great book, easy read... one you could pick up and read again when you need some inspiration or motivation. Ramona offers tips along the way throughout the book on how to think about inclining similar to the examples she gives from others. While these are specific recommendations (like volunteering or getting out for a walk, etc. the intent is to provoke thoughtful consideration on how to keep moving, keep growing, keep learning, and to continue to be kind and mindful. Especially with the current COVID status, one has to be a bit more creative with how to "get out there"... so a great time to read a book that inspires creativity and insight.

As an elder elder, I approached this book feeling that it might not offer reasonable changes in my life. I couldn't have been more wrong. Younger people can discover how to prepare for aging with optimism and principles useful for any stage of life. Older people, like me, can assess the preparations they have already made and others to consider. For example, I began a regular regimen of exercise when I was forty in order to be healthier then and now. Ramona's book offered options for more variety and fun programs of exercise.
Someone paraphrased Thoreau (incorrectly) as "Most men lead lives of quiet desperations, pushing the burden of their possessions before them." That's incorrect, but often true. When elders begin to down-size, many find not regret, but liberation and a new sense of freedom. Whether we divest belongings or activities no longer rewarding, Ramona's book teaches us how to build on our new freedom, renewing old hobbies, exploring new creative activities, finding social opportunities, and making contributions to our society. She makes it clear that we're never too old to reassess, re-order, and expand. This is a thoroughly-researched, well-thought-out, and very well-written book.

Not just for Grandparents!

I am under 40 and really enjoyed the book. It’s filled with fun personal anecdotes of inspired and inspiring “elders”. Beyond that, its a great re-cap on the major personal development theories of the modern era. Don’t be fooled by the title. There is something for everyone in this book. We are all someone else’s elder and could be a better version of our selves for ourselves and as an example to others.

It was complete synchronicity, through a friend of mine in Australia (I live in N. California!), that I found Inclined Elders, and subsequently what Ramona Oliver is up to from her home in Austin, Texas. It is a small world indeed!

I had just launched a new website - https://WildlyFreeElder.com - and was seeking elders to Spotlight who personify exactly what this book is all about. Not following, or giving into, the cultural mainstream narrative on this vitally important and unique journey within the elder years of our lives. Instead - thriving, staying curious, and engaged. Creating a legacy that will guide and support those coming behind us as well as those walking beside us....and simply enjoying the pleasure, passion, creativity and potential adventure of these years lived well!

There are a vast amount of resources within this book that can be extremely valuable for so many. But for me it was the elders of all ages who told their stories and lit up the pages with their essence and artistry. The addition of younger generations stories on their perception of coming into the elder years provided a backdrop for how we can open space for a new "elder paradigm" and initiation laced with wisdom, potential, inspired artistry, and a positive attitude for any "elder becoming".

No matter where you are on the timeline of your life, this book will provide you with an entirely new way of looking at aging. You will find yourself looking forward to the possibilities and opportunities that emerge once you cross the threshold into Elderhood. Not an age, but instead a state of being of heart, soul and mind!

Thank you Ramona for this extremely important re-frame for what it is to be an elder....and for becoming part of the Wildly Free Elder community!!

Inclined Elders is a wonderful read for those thinking about, entering, or rebooting their retirement. Filled with positive energy throughout, the book debunks the idea that retirement is a time of decline and cites many examples of elders who are living a life of incline. Inspiring, a must read, highly recommended!
