In Times of Peace is the first episode of the Dance of Darkness and Light series written by the author known as The Loneliest Lone Wolf. Alexa and Aeneas are two Candidates who are selected to represent Realm 9 and join the United Imperial Academy. But an unexpected attack by the Fade -- primary Creatures of Dark that spring from the other side of the Veil -- forces Sovereign Area Commander Locke to select Alexa's brother Alex and her childhood friend Omphale in their stead. Alex and Omphale try their best to slip into their new identities, but their performances in the Imperial Academy vary wildly, arousing suspicion in the eyes of Vice Dean Ash. Things escalate further when Ash sends Alex into a direct confrontation with the Fade entities, Azo and Oga.
In Times of Peace is a promising start to the sci-fi/fantasy series Dance of Light and Darkness that is bound to entertain fans of young adult novels. The plot moves at a fast pace, and the author deftly provides exposition through dialogue that feels organic and immerses the reader further into the story. I found Alex and Omphale to be likable characters and sympathetic as protagonists. I also found Dean Drone to be an interesting character whose aura and personality reminded me of Albus Dumbledore from the Harry Potter books. Overall, I enjoyed reading In Times of Peace. I would recommend it to readers who enjoy books such as The Hunger Games or the Divergent series.
