Ever wondered what it would be like to live in the past, in times you can only read about? In If You Were Me and Lived in... Ancient China: The Han Dynasty - An Introduction to Civilizations Throughout Time (Volume 2), Carole P. Roman explores what life was like for people of different classes and occupations during the Han Dynasty. The Han Dynasty was one of the earliest civilizations and existed for more than four hundred years, and therefore remains important not only in Chinese history, but also in world history. Carole P. Roman further examines what life would have been like for a young boy, who was a doctor’s son. Carole also notes key characters in Chinese history such as Qin Shi Huang, Leizu, Ban Zhao, among others. If You Were Me and Lived in... Ancient China fits nicely into the educational genre for young readers.

The book is written in the second person which enhanced my ability to visualize what my life would have been like, living in the ancient world. What aided me further in understanding China’s past way of life were the beautiful and educational illustrations executed by Mateya Arkova. If You Were Me and Lived in... Ancient China by Carole P. Roman incorporates humor and informative content. The narration grabbed my interest as the story development was thoughtful and skillfully outlined. I also got to learn a lot about the Chinese culture, despite the fact that the book is written for a young audience. At the end of the book, there is also a glossary with a diverse range of words to help the young reader build their vocabulary. I definitely recommend this book to young readers or anyone who would like to learn more about Chinese history.
