Spanning over fifty years, I Remember is the story of a suburban house witnessing the ups and downs of life through the various families that sought its sanctuary. This debut novel by Emily Hoffmann opens with a couple, Elaine and James Morgan, moving into their new home. Over the years, the house sees their children growing up and taking different paths as they enter adulthood. When the Morgans eventually leave, the house mourns the loss of its beloved inhabitants. As the years and decades pass, the house bears witness to devastating tragedies and loss but never lets hope fade away. It even opens its doors to an orange furry feline and its litter during a time when it was abandoned.
I Remember is a collection of loosely interconnected slice-of-life stories narrated by a silent observer. Author Emily Hoffmann has hit the nail on the head with her debut novel, which leaves the reader with a lot to contemplate. The third-person style narrative provides readers with a bird's-eye view into the characters' lives. Although you're never inside their heads, you always find their circumstances relatable and sympathize with their plight. The story is divided into six parts, showcasing a different family residing in the house and becoming part of its memories. The bittersweet nature of the tales mirrors real life, where everyone has their share of ups and downs, and nothing ever remains permanent. Overall, I found I Remember to be a captivating book that I recommend to anyone who enjoys slice-of-life stories.
