Set in the 1950s, I Never Called him Pa by Diane Kane is a historical fiction novel that encourages readers to live their lives with love, devotion, and respect. Henry was barely five years old when his mother left him for a man or an adventure. His grandmother, whom he called Gram, began taking care of him. Henry never knew his father, so he couldn't quite miss the man. However, he missed his mother almost every single day. His life in the country was largely content, yet there was something missing. That missing piece of the puzzle came in the form of a man named Ernest. When he entered Henry and his Gram's house, he was a man on the verge of dying. Nevertheless, soon, not only did he defeat his illness, he even instilled a new joy and faith in the lives of everyone he met.
I Never Called him Pa is the perfect example of a feel-good novel. Henry's innocent introspections coupled with Ernest's unwavering beliefs are guaranteed to uplift your spirits. Diane Kane has tackled even the most sensitive topics with unbelievable finesse. Whether it was the initial disturbing reaction of the people toward Ernest because of the color of his skin or the question of Mr. Shoemaker's sexuality, every prejudice was handled with the utmost sensitivity and proper respect. And what's even more beautiful is that the author has managed to create an unforgettable story out of it. I Never Called him Pa by Diane Kane is a must-read book. If nothing else, it will encourage you to become a better human being.
