I am Jess is an inspirational memoir by Jessica Fahl recounting her experiences of an emotionally abusive relationship with her first husband, Scott. Growing up, Jess has a hard time dealing with the breakdown of her parents' marriage due to her father falling in love with another woman. At the age of nineteen, she meets Scott, who becomes her first serious romantic partner. After a few years of dating, Scott marries Jess. But she soon realizes that the man she married isn't who she thought he was. From early on, he started manipulating her, making her feel guilty and insecure about everything. While Jess was home taking care of their newborn son and their older special needs child, Scott was out there making trips to Vegas and having extramarital affairs.

A heartbreaking tale of emotional neglect and a dysfunctional relationship, I am Jess is a must-read for anyone who has ever had to deal with someone with a narcissistic personality. Author Jessica Fahl lays bare the story of her marriage to her first husband, Scott, who marginalized and manipulated her from the get-go, leaving her to question her own choices and actions. This was on top of raising two kids almost on her own -- one of them a special needs child -- due to Scott's unavailability and inability to take care of their needs. It is an emotional rollercoaster that leaves a lot to ponder about and makes you introspect. An unflinching look at a dysfunctional marriage, I highly recommend I am Jess.
