Hunting Teddy Roosevelt by James Ross is a historical fiction novel centered on the famous Teddy Roosevelt, former president of the United States. After finishing his second term as president, Roosevelt decides to retire from public life and explore Africa with his son, Kermit, and a crew of natives and bodyguards. But his enemies from the US follow and plant an assassin in his wake, waiting for the right moment to strike. Meanwhile, a former sweetheart-turned-reporter wants perhaps more than just a sensational story from him. Will Roosevelt return to the United States safe and sound, or will he fall victim to the ruthless cutthroats after him?
The book is an easy read, filled with three-dimensional characters with believable ambitions. The prose is smooth and enjoyable. I also like the character development portrayed in Kermit, who at his young age was already struggling with alcoholism. The way Roosevelt tried to help his son without judging him was absolutely brilliant, in my opinion. As historical fiction goes, some parts are based on actual historical accounts whereas others are not. But this book drove me to read more about Roosevelt so I could discover for myself what parts were real and which parts were made up. That’s how good this book is—it made me want to know more about the man Teddy Roosevelt. Hunting Teddy Roosevelt by James Ross is a clean read with wholesome adventures that I would highly recommend for readers of all ages who enjoy historical fiction.
