Humans, Consciousness, and Everything in Between by Emily Kavic is an imaginative, clever commentary on humanity, life, death, time, war, mental health, and other themes. It tells the story of human nature through a couch that travels from place to place. As you read, you will discover that its fabric holds the lives, loves, secrets, losses, memories, and minutia that it has encountered, and has a consciousness of its own. You get a perspective that is both objective and subjective. The author's choice to use an inanimate object to be the repository of life and consciousness--for one character, a lifeline to survival, the afterlife, and rebirth--is highly inventive. Kavic writes in poetic language that conveys ideas that are at times complex; at times easier to access.
It is said that objects hold the energy and spirit of their previous owner, and this book captures that in a way. The phrase "If these walls could talk" comes to mind. If a piece of furniture from your grandparents' or great-grandparents' house could talk, what stories would it tell? What stories would one of your old pillows tell if found in a dumpster years from now? I like Kavic's descriptions. She puts you there in the setting, letting you experience the scenes with your senses--like her description of the dump in the opening passages. I like the philosophical tone of the book, and how it opens you to different ways of thinking and viewing the world. You'll meet interesting characters like Lawrence, who likes to change the content of books to his liking, or the man who decides to stop talking. At times you'll read phrases that are cynical or sardonic, and this is a nice take for a change. You will read how books and writing play out in the lives of some of the characters. This book is balanced and has a personality. If you're looking for something different, something to elevate your consciousness, look no further than Humans, Consciousness, and Everything in Between by Emily Kavic.
