Lady Julianne Gatewick is horrified as her brother, Tristan, involved with the birth of his first child, selects as her guardian the notorious Marc Darcet, Earl of Hawkfield, better known as "Hawk." Hawk's guardianship will be overseen by his much married Aunt Hester who doesn't always follows English Regency society's strict rules. Julianne gathers with her friends, Georgette, Sally and Amy, to ponder what must be done. Julianne has long adored Hawk, but he is a number of years older and much more sophisticated than she can imagine being. So what's a lady to do? Julianne pens a pamphlet anonymously and entitles it "The Secrets of Seduction." Not that she's any expert, but Julianne writes of how a lady must entice the man of her dreams into marrying her. Well, Julianne's pamphlet is published, and Regency England is in shock as people read what she's written. Hawk knows instantly who the author is, as Julianne makes a reference to flowers left by suitors; but can he know how to tell Julianne of the serious mistake he made years before and what form the consequences have taken?
Vicky Dreiling knows how to write a Regency romance that will keep the reader fascinated until book's ending. She creates good tension immediately between Hawk and Julianne. Her use of humor in her character's dialogue makes the story delightful to read and her knowledge of Regency England lends authenticity to each chapter. That the book is well-written and well-edited goes without saying. Vicky Dreiling's stories should be on the purchase list for all Regency romance fans.
