Addressing young children's challenging behaviors can be trying for adults. In How to Cure a Mine Monster, Brittany Plumeri has combined a fun story with an interrupting chant that kids can use to reverse direction. Kids are invited to help Noah, the scientist, perfect his system for stopping the MINE monsters. First, the chant is introduced, which includes the word 'stop' followed by an action. Then, three scenarios are presented, each one becoming harder. Kids are encouraged to watch for the signs that the MINE monster is about to appear and stop it in its tracks. Next, they are encouraged to think of how the problem could be resolved without yelling. A QR code is included that allows kids to get a free printable to make a MINE monster.
Brittany Plumeri's book How to Cure a Mine Monster gives kids the tools to change their behavior. Kids are challenged to recognize situations and signs leading up to the outburst of Mine, Mine, Mine. Giving kids a physical activity to interrupt the emotions surging inside them allows them to refocus and find another solution to the situation. The illustrations by Zuzana Svobodová are outstanding. They look like they belong in an animated movie. Each Mine Monster is unique and full of personality. As a retired children's librarian, I know how often parents search for books they can share with their kids that reinforce good behavior. Parents and teachers looking for a fun way to teach manners will love How to Cure a Mine Monster.
