Hook, Line, and Sinker by Marc Jedel is the third book in the Ozarks Lake Mystery series. When she started her day Elizabeth never expected that everything would change with a phone call that would lead her to meet her father. She finally gets a chance to ask the questions she’s always wanted to but the reunion becomes more complicated when she learns that he’s a suspect in a murder investigation. Getting to know her father was a difficult enough task, but as Elizabeth and her husband Jonas start investigating, they’re on the trail of those digging for diamonds. Can they catch the killer before her father goes down for the crime?
The plot revolves around Elizabeth’s relationship with her newfound father with the story immediately delving into the action. This relationship is more complex as she had believed that he was dead. From this moment, Elizabeth is rooted in coming to terms with a new dynamic in her life while also struggling with solving a mystery. The plot balances the mystery elements with the familial relationship, adding an emotional tone. Various references to Arkansas help establish the setting, such as the Crater of Diamonds State Park which plays a significant part in the mystery. The story weaves between the perspectives of Elizabeth and Jonas with the latter growing more into the role of a sleuth. Marc Jedel keeps a nice balance between their two voices with their perspectives providing a well-rounded view of the mystery. Hunting for gems helps to keep the tone lighthearted and pairs well with the humorous aspect of Jedel’s writing style. The specific choices of language help to establish the tone. Charming and humorous, Hook, Line, and Sinker blends mystery with heart, the fun of digging for diamonds, and the complicated dynamics of a father-daughter relationship.
