Hole In the Rock by Rebecca Bischoff is a wonderfully unique coming-of-age story. Twelve-year-old Lizza Crapo is an animal lover, whose father has just started a taxidermy business. Lizza is not too happy about seeing all the stuffed dead creatures in her dad's shop and tries to slow down her dad's business with a simple plan that goes awry. Things escalate, and soon she, her dad, and her 6-year-old, non-verbal brother are forced to move into the Hole N' the Rock. Hole N' the Rock is a cave that her great-grandparents enlarged to make a home. Now it has become a tourist attraction, with a gift shop and tours of the house in the cave. Lizza is mortified to be living there but will her plans to convince her dad to move work?

Rebecca Bischoff has created a memorable character in Lizza. She is a headstrong, take-charge girl, which tends to land her in some tricky predicaments. Bischoff has surrounded Lizza with equally strong characters, from her family to her best friend, Brooklyn. The relationships Lizza has with her family, friends, and neighbors ring true. Lizza and Brooklyn's friendship reminded me of the friendships I had in my tweens. I enjoyed seeing Lizza's maturation as she realizes her actions sometimes have unintended consequences, and she must own them. Fans of the Higher Power of Lucky will enjoy Lizza's equally memorable adventures. Hole In the Rock is the perfect combination of action, friendship, and character development. I thoroughly enjoyed Hole In the Rock and highly recommend it.
