Hitchin’ Post and the Tornado Twistin’ 4th of July Celebration, written by Julie Barker and illustrated by Carolyn Altman, is a short children’s story that tells the tale of Hitch, the jackrabbit, as he prepares for the Independence Day Celebration set to take place at his ranch. Hitch’s brothers show up to celebrate with him but Hitch faces some serious setbacks just one day before the celebration is supposed to start. First, one of his bulls gets out of the fence, then a tornado comes along and causes some terrible damage to Hitch’s barn. Even with his brothers by his side to help him, can Hitch get the bull back in his pen and get the barn repaired in time for the 4th of July Celebration?
Hitchin’ Post and the Tornado Twistin’ 4th of July Celebration is a brilliantly woven story with a strong plot that will easily entertain anyone. The characters are fun to get to know as they all have distinctively different behavior that makes the story even more entertaining. The illustrations by Carolyn Altman are fun and engaging, complementing the story. My favorite thing about this story is the plot twist. Just when you think the story is finished, Barker has a whole new idea that keeps the fun going. I recommend this book to children as well as anyone who enjoys reading to children. I love how Barker has written an interesting story that will teach kids how working together as a team makes the hard work a whole lot lighter and much more rewarding.
