Daniel Yamun Ukang, of the South Sudan Luo tribe, immigrated to San Diego, California in 2001 as a refugee from the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya where he lived for more than a decade with sixteen thousand other Lost Boys. He is the president of the California Sudanese Lost Boys and Girls Foundation, a nonprofit organization that fosters community-based assistance to the San Diego Lost Boys and provides school supplies to Awoda Primary School in South Sudan. Daniel enjoys playing soccer, listening to gospel music, and spending time with his family. He lives in San Diego with his wife, Mary, and their four children.

Hinterlands Of Hope: A Lost Boy's Journey From the Southern Sudan War Zones by Daniel Yamun Ukang is the awe-inspiring journey of the author who fled his home in South Sudan. His village, Yabullu, was attacked by the Arab-led Khartoum government during the Second Sudanese Civil War between the central Sudanese government of Khartoum and Sudan's People's Liberation Army (SPLA) that lasted from 1983 to 2005. Hinterlands of Hope is the author's story of hope, faith, courage, strength, perseverance, determination, and survival where he speaks about the horrific events of the war he experienced as well as his life in the conflict's aftermath. He shares his ordeal of running for his life at the age of six, journeying across East Africa's Sahara Desert for more than a thousand miles, and being forced into a river infested with crocodiles by the Sudanese government troops. From living in refugee camps, and eating just one meal a day, the author speaks about how he feared he would never be able to lead a normal life again.
Hinterlands Of Hope chronicles the author's tumultuous journey from his home in Yabullu, South Sudan to Ethiopia, Kenya, and finally to America, and his faith in God.
