Hiding In Plain Sight by Barbara A. Luker follows Jordan, a woman escaping her abusive husband, Richard, by relocating to a remote cabin in Wyoming. Jordan tries to find some solitude, however fragile, and get a fresh start with her adopted dog, Pete. After suffering an injury during a run, she meets Ben, a local lawyer, who also seeks a new beginning after his career in Washington, D.C. collapsed due to the deplorable actions of his politician brother, Brandon. As Ben helps Jordan recover, their bond deepens. Jordan's trust issues and the fear that stems from her trauma are unrelenting. After an unsettling run-in with Ben's brother Brandon, Jordan has to decide how to prioritize her own healing and safety, and what that means on her journey to reclaim her whole self.
Hiding In Plain Sight by Barbara A. Luker is such a great tale, and it runs the whole gamut of emotions for both readers and its characters. The writing is fluid and comfortable, allowing readers to empathize deeply with Jordan and breathe in that fresh air. The emotional connection between Jordan and Ben is beautifully developed, unfolding at an organic pace. Luker is skilled at creating shared moments that mix humor and tenderness, such as an ice cream outing to celebrate Jordan's recovery. That said, the fear factor is thick with all things Richard, and because Luker keeps this at the forefront, we stay fully invested in Jordan's choices. Overall, Hiding in Plain Sight is an ode to love and the resilience of women, and resonates long after the last page is turned. Very highly recommended.
