Her Brown Hair by Jill Dana is a colorful children’s book about friendship. I chose to read Her Brown Hair with my 4-year-old because it is about friendship. In the book, a child is visiting her sick friend. The story shows different things that the child does for her friend, such as bringing her books. This book is not very long and my child was able to read it by herself. The colorful pictures of the clay scenes were the highlight of the book. Many of the pictures in the story are of the books the children are reading.

The story does not say what the girl in the hospital is suffering from, only that she does not feel well sometimes. When my child asked why the girl was in the hospital, I had to guess. I did some research and from reading the synopsis on Dana’s first book in the series I found out that the girl is suffering from cancer. I really like the idea of showing children how to help and deal with a friend who has cancer. This would be a good series to have in any doctor’s waiting room.

This book is the second in Dana’s Hair series. The first book is called Her Pink Hair and I have yet to read it. If you choose to read this series, then I suggest you read them in order so that you can understand why the girl is in the hospital. You can also see how the child deals with her friend having cancer.
