Harold Archermouse is hungry. He's busy fishing in the stream for his dinner when a little girl crosses the bridge above him and stops to make a wish, dropping a coin and a honey cake into the water to secure her wish. The girl has lost her locket, a treasure given to her by her mother. It's a golden locket and in rhyming verse, the girl explains in her wish that the locket is a golden memory, a real treasure.
Harold is struck by the girl's impassioned plea. After enjoying the honey cake, he sets off on a quest to find the locket for the little girl. He visits several of his animal and bird friends, each using their own talents to locate the lost treasure. They do find it and Harold takes pleasure in returning it to the little girl one night as she lay sleeping. The girl returns to the bridge with a gift of thanks, a cherry bun. Harold agrees with the girl that "one good turn deserves another" and sets off again to share the treasured cherry bun with his sleuthing friends.
In Harold Archermouse and the Golden Locket, Sally-Ann Warner has written a charming story about a caring mouse and a little girl with a heartfelt plea to find a lost treasure. The story is colorfully illustrated and it is partially told in rhyming verse. It is an easy-to-read story full of valuable lessons about friendship, sharing and looking out for one another. This is a delightful story to teach young readers about values.
