Grave Secrets by Cassandra Aston follows a fascinating narrative trajectory. Allie Graves has survived the years since her death hunting demons under the angel Gabriel’s command. Near the end of her six-year contract, a strange being invades her home, dropping an amulet. Allie heads to North Carolina, where she is arrested for shoplifting. The mysterious Simon arrives and posts her bail. He is available at night but claims to spend days in an in-between zone similar to purgatory. Allie must determine whether Simon is good or evil and if she can trust her heart. Time is running short as the angels close in, and Allie approaches the age when her great-grandmother died of a mysterious ailment.
Grave Secrets by Cassandra Aston is a puzzle-filled paranormal fantasy. I found the character of Allie appealing and longed for her to have the security she craved. Her return to everyday life was under threat from multiple sources, making the plot complex and startling. She had been emotionally frozen by her death, leaving her somewhere between a young and new adult character. I enjoyed the discovery process as she uncovered the clues regarding her heritage. Simon was a surprising hero. He was unavailable due to his nature and past attachment, which created the right amount of romantic tension. I wanted Allie and him to couple up, and wondering whether this would happen generated suspense. There was also danger, and the sources were closer than I expected, drawing me into sharing the heroine’s vulnerability. Grave Secrets by Cassandra Aston is unpredictable and expands the boundaries of preternatural fiction.
