Grave New World by Kate Quinn is the first book in the Down & Dirty Supernatural Cleaning Services series. Paige Harper has made a living from converting her father's cleaning business into one that cleans up supernatural messes. Despite how well she can clean up after a vampire rave, her personal life is still a bit of a mess. Her ex-husband still manages to drag her into his problems such as giving the bottom floor of her house to a stranger, putting her house up in a poker game, and landing her in the middle of a murder investigation after she literally caught him red-handed with the murder weapon. She makes a faerie bargain with him to get her house back and him out of her life but to catch the real killer, she'll need the help of the private investigator next door who also happens to be a seductive werewolf.
The supernatural world is messy, chaotic, and creates a grittiness in the tone of the story world. Kate Quinn has taken supernatural creatures you're familiar with, such as werewolves, and placed a unique spin on them. In this world, you'll find unicorn meat, a fae with a sweet tooth, harpies that have discovered drugs, a one-eyed werewolf, and even sentient plants and objects. Every character has a vivid personality. Each of the characters in her life is well-defined so you either love them or hate them. Her sister-in-law Shauna brings chaos into her life but does so in a bubbly, lovable way that comes with a certain amount of flair and charm. Her new housemate is introduced via Paige's ex-husband which sets up a certain opinion that gets flipped as the story progresses and reveals a character that is layered, supportive, inspirational, and completely breaks stereotypes. The humor woven throughout is filled with puns and sarcasm, which are two elements that Paige displays along, with a fiery spirit that instantly makes you fall in love with her from the first page. Top-notch humor, a gritty supernatural backdrop, a sarcastic narrator, and plenty of puns create the comedic and fast-paced murder mystery that is Grave New World.
