Grave Danger by SK Gregory is an Aurelia Graves novel. Aurelia Graves has the worst luck: she has no friends, the worst luck with boyfriends, and she has powers that are getting out of control. When her best friend begs her to raise a ghost from the cemetery, she doesn't believe anything will actually happen. When a strange man stumbles through the cemetery, she's branded the town witch for supposedly bringing the man back from the dead. Years later, she's discovered that the rumors are true: she really can bring people back from the dead. Her life gets even worse when she meets the charming Daniel who turns out to be a Shadow Mage that wants to kill her. To save herself, she has to confront the father that abandoned her, take a job at the local police station working for Sheriff Brody who has been in love with her since high school, and help solve two unrelated murders, all while running from Daniel who is willing to kill to get her help.
SK Gregory delivers a fresh perspective on magic, necromancy, and what it means to be a hero. Grave Danger is fun, smart, a little dark, and mysterious. There's a sleuth mystery undercurrent to the story that is really fun and gives a different tone to the usual darkness of necromancy stories. It's very character driven, going between her and Sheriff Brody, allowing for a personal growth and perspective from each of the characters. I love how three seemingly unrelated plot lines come together perfectly at the end. I have a lot of sympathy for Aurelia. Her luck really is awful, but at times it's almost comical. I don't pity her, though. She's strong, witty, and doesn't wallow. Her stubbornness is very likable. She does have her low moments, but she has the makings of a great heroine. It feels like she has a long journey ahead of her, but she'll get stronger through each obstacle. I'm excited to see where Gregory will take Aurelia and Brody!
