Grammar Adventures by Lakshmi Narayani contains eight story lessons with grammatical learning objectives. Grammy and the "G" Gang, eight-year-old quadruplets Gary, Gabby, Gloria, and Griffin, embark on adventures as a clock made by T. Gramm, their great-great-grandfather, whisks them away to various places and times to solve grammatical problems. They locate the parts of speech during their first trip, and a gentleman gives Grammy and the children a chest with six locks. For the next seven Saturdays, the gang visits different places, mastering lessons in grammar. Until the chest is unlocked in each place, a person, animal, or thing provides them with a key that will unfasten one lock. At the end of the story, a "scroll" reveals the lesson learned and its real-world application. Definitions of key terms follow and the author encourages games to reinforce the skills.
Lakshmi Narayani knows how to make learning fun! Incorporating adventures into learning English concepts is a great way to increase retention of the material and promote lifelong learning. Even the characters are an example of figurative language, as teachers could use their names as an example of alliteration. Caregivers could supplement their child's education or a homeschool teacher could use the stories to strengthen their lessons. Within a classroom setting, each lesson briefly recaps the G Gang's adventures, making it easy for students who have missed a lesson to follow along with the story as educators reinforce the concept. Illustrated with colorful pictures that will grab a visual learner's attention, the stories and games will also appeal to auditory and tactile learners. Grammar Adventures is a great selection for teachers and homeschool families who hope to instill grammar rules in children's minds in a fun and engaging way.
