Goodbye Bombay by Gry Finsnes is the story of how an outsider lives in Bombay, and gives us an account of her life in that city. The novel is sometimes gritty and raw, and sometimes very, very romantic. Christine is a Norwegian lawyer living in Bombay, India. The novel is set in the 1980s when Bombay was pretty much just as it is now, with religious conflicts, and parties that lived up to the name this city has achieved. Married with one daughter, she and her husband are living an ordinary life when Christine encounters a handsome native who will turn her life upside down. The thrill of new love, the passion, and the lust consume her. But her one decision will change how she lives her life. And now 20 years later, her past returns. The question is: is it good or bad?
This novel is very heartfelt and emotional at times. It does not give you the glamorized version of Bombay that you have come to know, but the version of Bombay that people live in. It is hot and sticky, but it is beautiful too. I felt that Christine’s conflict was very real. Wasn’t this happening at that time? People falling in love with the locals and settling there, and sometimes it worked and sometimes it did not. The characterization was amazing and I enjoyed the development of the novel. The two parts flowed wonderfully and in sync. It is wonderful and the cover is brilliant.
